Duck into Dymocks: it’s Love Your Bookshop Day!

It’s official – we all want to read more and scroll less. Whether you’re a regular reader or not, you’re saying you wish you could dive into the pages of a book more often – and guess what? The research proves it’s good for you too.

In fact, research from Yale University shows that reading helps us live longer, better lives. This study found that reading fiction books for at least 30 minutes a day could add an average of two years to readers’ lives. Reading also protects against cognitive decline and reduces stress and anxiety. If that isn’t quite convincing enough, there’s also a strong correlation between reading prior to bedtime and improved sleep, as well as increased social and intellectual skills that books give us. For a longer lifespan, a better quality of life and a happier disposition, books can’t be overlooked.

To celebrate the magical healing powers of stories, here’s just some of the activities you’ll find Dymocks in Collins234 this annual “Love Your Bookshop Day” on Saturday 11 October:

  1. Visiting authors in the Literary Lounge: we have some of our most-loved local authors dropping into our store for a heap of fun and interactive events. You can pull up a chair or a cushion at our specially created Literary Lounge to have a chat about your favourite book or ask a burning question. What’s it like to be an author? Do writers have their own favourite characters in the books they write? Gather your questions and get ready to talk all things books.
  2. Adopt a duck: for a small donation you can ‘adopt a duck’, which will provide funds to important literacy charities here in Australia. Our visiting authors on the day will even create a special adoption story for you and your duck to take home, as well as an adoption certificate. Adopt a duck for yourself or as a gift for someone special in your life who loves books.
  3. Treasure duck hunt: find the clues and codes to solve the puzzles and go into the draw to win fabulous raffle prizes. A giant duck and a huge ‘Spot the Dog’ toy are up for grabs.
  4. How many ducks? Can you guess how many ducks are inside our container just by looking? If you get it right, you’ll win a mystery prize.
  5. Activity packs: kids can colour and draw their way through heaps of fun duck-themed activities in our special packs available on the day.

Best of all, every activity we are running this year will support the important work of Dymocks Children’s Charities and the Indigenous Literary Foundation.
